WYSIWYG Font Preview 1.0 is the latest offering of CompleatMac Software's line of products created in SuperCard. According to CompleatMac Software:

WYSIWYG Font Preview (WFP) is a utility for quickly and easily viewing fonts in their own typefaces. Preview font, size and style from within one convenient location. Unlike other font viewers, WFP lets you see all your fonts together in a WYSIWYG menu, so you don't have to go through them one at a time.

WFP was designed to be utilized like a desk accessory accessed from the Apple Menu. WFP's "File" menu includes an "Install…" option, so an alias of WFP can be installed into the Apple Menu with the click of one button.

More Info Released on the XXL Revision
Stephane Leys has kindly provided us with additional information regarding the November release of XXL, a spreadsheet sheet and chart objects external for SuperCard. According to Mr. Leys, new features include:

Mr. Leys informed us, however, that the most important changes are what you do not see. All spreadsheet data has been moved to the data fork. This should decrease the time needed when saving a project, specifically large files. In addition, a few bugs were eliminated which should make the program more reliable. As a final note, XXL is now available as freeware. [11/8]

The XXL November Release Now Available
Stephane Leys' XXL, an external which implements spreadsheets in the SuperCard environment, has received an update. Unfortunately, we could not find any information in relation to what has changed in this version. SCR will inform you of this information as it becomes available.

XXL comes in two versions, a standard version and a development version. The standard version can be used by everyone, even those who do not own SuperCard. However, the ability to script has been disabled. The development version requires the full version of SuperCard 3.6.2b and allows XXL to be included in your own projects. (Note that both versions of XXL will only work on PowerPC Macintoshes.) [11/7]

Where Can I Find The WetWare Collections?
Many people have recently been having some trouble locating FourthWorld's WetWare Collections. Some people have reported some download locations on the SuperCard List. There are two main places where the three collections can be found. The first place is the iMac.MacintoshDeveloper.com hotline server. The second place is the iMac.MacintoshDeveloper.com file server. The below files are linked from the file server:

The above links have been fixed in the files section. Update: Chilton Webb, maintainer of MacintoshDeveloper.com, mentioned that these links are only temporary. We will report the new locations after the change occurs. [10/22, updated 10/24]

Next Generation of ADB/IO to Ship with SuperCard Externals
Chilton Webb, maintainer of MacintoshDeveloper.com, has reported that an unreleased USB device, which eventually may be known as USB/IO, will ship with a few SuperCard externals. These externals will allow the device to work easily in SuperCard.

For those who have not heard of the ADB/IO or the "USB/IO," Chilton Webb described the relationship and purpose of the two devices:

ADB/IO was a device that allowed you to control and obtain real world info via a cute little box that hung off the end of the ADB chain on older Macs. The new version will be very similar but will likely ship in whatever iMac color is in at the time, and have the aforementioned advantages.

SCR will keep you informed as more information becomes available. [10/17]

Flamethrower 1.1 Beta 8 Now Available
Announced on the newly reopened SuperCard List, the new version of the Flamethrower Beta adds sorting capabilities to the "SuperCard based CGI authoring environment for web servers." According to Christopher Watson, who posted the announcement to the list:

The new "sort text" command sorts the text in a field or a variable. Though it performs textual, numeric, date/time and international sorts, it doesn't sort by chunk (meaning, you can't say something like "sort text fld 1 by item 2".

Mr. Watson requested to know in his post if people would be interested in a sort by chunk feature. Please let him know if you would like to see such a feature. Visit the Flamethrower Beta page at Solutions Etcetera to download the Beta 8 of Flamethrower. [10/9]

SuperCard and Mac OS X
Rolf Kocherhans made a post to the newly reopened SuperCard List (see separate story) where he requested information concerning a Carbon version of SuperCard. Scott Simon of Solutions Etcetera posted the following response to Rolf's message, containing some interesting facts:

Sorry... no announcements have been made. That having been said... I can tell you that there are various components of SuperCard that require a complete rewrite for use under OS X. Others appear to lend themselves rather well to a carbon port, except that there currently exist some incomplete areas in the tools and documentation necessary for a complete carbon port for a tool like SuperCard. Without going into a lot of technical mumbo jumbo, it is quite possible that these incomplete areas will be filled in sometime in the future. But until they are, it makes it a difficult decision whether or not the carbon port would be a worthwhile stepping stone to a true OS X native SuperCard.

Because of this our decision was to go ahead and go to work on a cocoa based rewrite of those components that NEED to be rewritten. This involves ramping up our engineers to either java or objectified C as these are currently the only two supported development environments for cocoa. SuperCard is currently written in C.

During the rewrite our hopes are that Apple will better document the material in the carbon porting process that are currently incomplete for our needs. If so, the carbon port may be the best way to go. If not, we will move on to a rewrite of the additional components.

As for a timeline on all of this. It is tough to say. I think it is a given that SC will not be OS X native before OS X actually is released, maybe longer.

The SuperCard List Returns
After mysteriously disappearing for more than a week, the SuperCard List has returned. The discussion list is now served my eGroups, rather than MacRevolution, its previous host. Since the provider has changed, it is necessary to rejoin in order to continue receiving emails from the list. [10/8]

YENCO.COM on Mac OS X
Mike Yenco has notified us concerning some tests that he has performed regarding YENCO.COM's four products and Mac OS X public beta.

Before we go into detail about the results of these tests, keep in mind that SuperCard has not yet been ported to Carbon and all programs/projects built in SuperCard will run in the Classic environment. Mr. Yenco wanted to determine whether or not his products would run correctly under the Classic environment of Mac OS X public beta.

For the most part, Archive, Finance, and iCalendar all work correctly. One exception is that the software update feature will not function at all. (This is because classic applications cannot currently access Mac OS X PPP. As a result, this feature will not work until Apple adds this feature.)

In Finance, there is a banking Internet links palette. For the above reasons, this palette will also not function properly.

YENCO.COM's fourth product, Agenda, does not work under Classic. The main window of Agenda fails to draw properly because of the custom "round" windows definition that it uses. Also, Mac OS X public beta currently has no sound-in support. As a result, voice reminders cannot be made.

Overall, these limitations are the result of the shortcomings of Mac OS public beta. (Remember that the public beta is beta software.) As a result, it is really not possible to make these features work by modifying the program but to wait until Apple addresses the problems.

SCR does not currently have the Mac OS X public beta, although we plan to order our copy in the near future. As a result, we cannot currently verify if other SuperCard programs work correctly or not. However, feel free to let us know if your program(s) and/ or projects written by others work correctly. [10/4]

SCR Celebrates Second Anniversary
Two years ago today was not any ordinary day. Two important changes to the world occurred on October 3rd, 1998: The launching of not only the first SuperCard news site, but a web page with the most hideous site design in the universe. The website was called SuperCard Info and its first news post welcomed SuperCard users, asked for feedback , and briefly mentioned SuperCard 3.5, which had not yet been released at the time:

Welcome to SuperCard Info. Here you will find news and links about SuperCard and IncWell, SuperCard's new developer and publisher. This site is new and it may take a while to adjust to all of your wants and needs. (By the way, SuperCard Info and HyperSense Info are not in any way affiliated with IncWell or Thoughtful Software).

SuperCard 3.5, a major upgrade from IncWell, is going to be released this weekend. Features, such as AppleScript and Appearance Manager support will make their debut in this release. For those of you who have any version of SuperCard, especially versions prior to 3.0, this is a must have upgrade.

E-mail me with any of your questions, opinions, or ideas.

Throughout the next year, SuperCard Info went trough numerous changes, ranging from a few much-needed site designs all the way to the addition of a files/downloads section.

In August of 1999, as a way to "refresh" the site, we changed the name of SuperCard Info to SuperCard Resource and moved to a new location. The new site featured and entirely new site design and some other minor enhancements. SCR has continued to follow a similar format that was established back in August, 1999.

We would like to take this time to thank all of our readers. A site does not exist without its readers. It is because of you that this site exists today and why it will exist in the future.

As always, please send us any comments or suggestions that you may have for improving SuperCard Resource. [10/3]

CompleatMac Software Releases Fortune Cookie 2.0
Fortune Cookie is described by CompleatMac Software as a "virtual fortune cookie: all the brief wisdom without all the little crumbly bits." Before this version (2.0), Fortune Cookie went under the name Random Wisdom for Short Attention Spans. YENCO.COM Releases Finance 3.6
As mentioned yesterday, the latest version of YENCO.COM's "checking, savings, and credit card account management program" has been updated to fix an obscure bug where using the date or checkmark options could cause the program to crash. [download] [9/25]

Mike Yenco Releases Info on YENCO.COM's Future Products
Mike Yenco, who is responsible for the YENCO.COM product line, has briefed us on some info regarding the future of his products. The company is using a "two-level approach" to enhance their products. The first level includes short term updates, which were designed to fix certain reported issues with previous versions. Two short term updates would include:

The other "level" includes the long term upgrades, essentially the next generation of YENCO.COM's products. These include upgrades to YENCO.COM's four products: iCalendar 2.0, Archive 5.0, Finance 4.0, and Agenda 2.0. [9/24, written 9/19]

YENCO.COM Simplifies Registration Format
YENCO.COM has decided to simplify the purchase options for registering their products. No longer will customers be confused by the registration options, such as the site license and world-wide options, as mentioned by Mike Yenco. YENCO.COM has phased out the two options and leaves behind the single user registration for the products. However, YENCO.COM mentioned that they would be "more than happy to negotiate pricing on larger orders if contacted." [9/24, written 9/19]

Carl Manaster's Growth Receives an Update
Version 2.0 of Growth allows the utility to be used within Rare Software's Tangerine. Mr. Manaster explains what Growth is:

Growth is a palette that operates within SuperCard's Project Editor or RareSoftware's alternative runtime editor, Tangerine, to provide easy, flexible growth behavior to other projects. Objects can be set to maintain a constant distance to either side of the window when it is resized, or may grow with the window. The same options are available for the vertical axis.

Julien Tessier Posts Scripts to the SuperCard List
Julien Tessier, who is affiliated with MacNN's MacGeneration.com, recently posted two scripts to the the SuperCard List. The scripts were posted as follows:

on CreatePath thePath

-- CreatePath <folder path>
-- needs Rinaldi's CreateFolder XCMD
put the itemDelimiter into oldDelimiter
set the itemDelimiter to ":"
if exists(folder, item 1 of thePath & colon) then

repeat with i=2 to the num of items of thePath

put item 1 to i of thePath & colon into folderToCreate
if exists(folder,folderToCreate) then next repeat
else CreateFolder folderToCreate

end repeat
set the itemDelimiter to oldDelimiter

else

set the itemDelimiter to oldDelimiter
return "Error: No such volume."

end if

end CreatePath

on FullCopy

-- CopyFileToPath <prov file> [,«dest
path or name»] [,«replace»] [,
«"DontResolveAlias"»] [,
«"DontShowProgress"»] [,
«"DontResolveDestAlias"»]
-- needs Rinaldi's FileCopy XCMD
put the itemDelimiter into oldDelimiter
set the itemDelimiter to ":"
get param(2)
delete last item of it
CreatePath it
put the params into theParams
put "FileCopy" into word 1 of theParams
do theParams
put the result into theResult
set the itemDelimiter to oldDelimiter
if "Error" is in the result then return theResult

end FullCopy

As with previous posts which included scripts from the SuperCard list, a few extra "hard returns" had to be placed into the code in order to "HTML-ize" the script.

Julien Tessier also suggested the opening of a scripts collection site where SuperCard users could post useful scripts that could eventually be used by other SuperCard users. SCR will keep you posted as information about this concept becomes available. [9/18, updated]

Bruce Martin Posts SpellChecker to SuperCard List
Bruce Martin (of Illuminator Software) posted a script to the SuperCard List that allows SuperCard to check spelling using the AppleWorks spell checker. The script was posted as follows:

on CheckSpell pText,pContainerID

-- the syntax:
-- pText - The text you want to check the spelling of
-- pContainerID - This is the ID number of the Field. Use this if you want the misspelled text changed to bold.

put cr into tCr
put "tell application " & quote & "AppleWorks" & quote&cr &¬
"check spelling of " & quote & pText & quote & cr &¬
"end tell" into tScript
put script(do,AppleScript,tScript) into tIncorrect
put the itemDel into tOlItem
delete char 1 of tIncorrect
delete last char of tIncorrect
put replace(tIncorrect,"},",cr) into tIncorrect
repeat with i = the num of lines in tIncorrect down to 1

delete char 1 to offset(":",line i of tIncorrect) of line i of tIncorrect
delete char 1 of item 1 of line i of tIncorrect
delete last char of item 1 of line i of tIncorrect
delete char 1 to offset(":",item 2 of line i of tIncorrect) of
item 2 of line i of tIncorrect

if i = the num of lines in tIncorrect then

delete char 1 of tIncorrect
delete last char of tIncorrect

end if

--find item 1 of line i of tIncorrect in pText
put the length of item 1 of line i of tIncorrect into tLen
put item 2 of line i of tIncorrect into tEnd
add tLen to tEnd

if pContainerID "" then

set the textStyle of char item 2 of line i of tIncorrect to

tEnd of cd fld ID pContainerID to bold

end if

end repeat

end CheckSpell

Mr. Martin explained that AppleWorks must be opened for this script to work correctly.

Note that we had to place a few extra "hard returns" in order to "HTML-ize" the script. Also note that some of the lines wrap over to the next line, which was unavoidable but will disappear if copied from this site into SuperCard. [9/18, updated]

MacintoshDeveloper.com Officially Launches
After the site has been active for a few months, maintainers Chilton Webb and Dr. Dobb's Journal have officially launched MacintoshDeveloper, a site which was originally known to the public as DevHQ. MacintoshDeveloper/DevHQ is a developer resource site which covers many development platforms, including SuperCard. [9/15]

MacConnect to Halt Flamethrower Support?
Bruce Martin recently made a post to the SuperCard List regarding the possibility that MacConnect will not continue support for Flamethrower because it may not had reached its goal of obtaining twenty people to signed up for accounts with Flamethrower support.

We had a chance to have MacConnect host Flame Projects, but I don't think we made our goal of 20 interested users, unless I was not told.

I didn't really keep pushing this because I knew Chris was working on the BlastShield thing for Flamethrower. Does anyone know if MacConnect is willing to try this again?

SCR will keep you posted on further information regarding this issue. [9/14]

Rare Software Releases Tangerine 1.6

Flamethrower 1.1 Public Beta Released
IncWell and Solutions Etcetera announced that they have publicly released Flamethrower 1.1b7, the latest beta of the "SuperCard based CGI authoring environment for web servers."

The final version of Flamethrower 1.1 will be free to existing owners and will include the following new features, according to IncWell and Solutions Etcetera:

Scott Simon, Director of Product Development for IncWell, explained the purpose of releasing the public beta and went into detail about some of Flamethrower's new features:

We're hoping the public release of this beta will give the majority of SuperCard users the opportunity to take a closer look at Flamethrower. We know that many of them are aware of its existence, but don't realize its incredible power and ease of use in building Web-based applications.

Flamethrower allows you to run several project-based Web applications simultaneously, but directing a client's request to a specific process required some extra engineering work, until now. Our new multi-project targeting technology, BlastShield, makes the intelligent dispatch of CGI events at the server a simple drag-and-drop operation. Administrators no longer need to be vigilant watchdogs over the projects on their servers. This technology will make it very easy to set up and maintain Flamethrower sites serving dozens of completely different Web-based applications.

Bug Found in WebbToy's Personal Site Administrator
Terry Judd found a small bug in Personal Site Administrator (see separate story) where the screen would freeze on launch if the Finder displayed the dialog box which requests to know whether or not the computer has Internet access. Chilton Webb, maintainer of WebbToys, is aware of the problem and will have a fix by the next revision of the program. (Source: SuperCard List) [8/3]

WebbToys Announces Personal Site Administrator
Personal Site Administrator is a new utility which WebbToys maintainer Chilton Webb describes as "indispensable." The program allows control of your server directly from a web browser by using SuperTalk or AppleScript. For example, it is possible to launch or quit applications on the server.

There are two types of commands in PSA. They include Pre-set commands and Open-ended commands. Open-ended commands allow complete access to the SuperTalk and AppleScript interpreters.

Pre-set commands include:

Currently this version is freeware. However, all future versions will be $50 shareware. Click here to see a screenshot of the program. [download] (Source: SuperCard List) [8/2]

Flamethrower Support for MacConnect
Bruce Martin recently made a post to the SuperCard List with information concerning a proposal which MacConnect set up that could eventually lead to the opening of a Flamethrower server at their service. (Flamethrower is IncWell's server side CGI engine.) MacConnect claims that they will open a Flamethrower server if twenty or more people open an account at MacConnect instead of a Unix or NT Hosting Service and ask for Flamethrower support. This goal will need to be reached by September 1, 2000.

Currently only one known provider, MacRevolution, supports Flamethrower. Martin believes that Flamethrower support should be offered by more than one company. MacConnect's goal, if successful, will help fulfill this concept. Visit this page at MacConnect for more information. [8/1]

YENCO.COM Celebrates First Anniversary
A year ago today YENCO.COM transformed from its former existence as Freelance Enterprises. With the change, the new YENCO.COM unveiled Archive for Mac 4.0 and released a minor update to Finance for Mac. Probably the most unexpected surprise (other than the name change) was the introduction of iCalendar. The program was a tool which made it easy to create calendars for website delivery. The final version was not released until a few months after this time, although a preview version was available immediately upon the announcement. [7/21]

YENCO.COM Updates Finance to Version 3.4
Version 3.4 of YENCO.COM's savings, checking and credit account management program adds the following features and enhancements to the program:

With the release of Finance 3.4, YENCO.COM revealed a two-step process in updating all of their software packages. The first step, which was completed with the release of Agenda 1.1 last week, was to add the ability to store "user preferences externally so they can be automatically transferred from one version to the next" to all of YENCO.COM's product line. The second step, currently not finished, will be to add a new and improved software update feature to the entire product line. Finance, with version 3.4, is the first product to add this new feature. Although it is not mentioned on YENCO.COM's website, it is likely that another YENCO.COM product will gain this feature every Monday. (For over ten weeks, YENCO.COM has released a new product or updated an existing one every week). [download] (Source: YENCO.COM) [7/17]

IncWell Releases SuperCard Personal Edition
IncWell, in association with Solutions Etcetera and MacNN, aims the new Personal Edition of SuperCard as a way to "step up" from HyperCard and presentation packages such as PowerPoint. The program currently sells for $49.95, but for a limited time only. The Personal Edition is essentially the full SuperCard package with the full feature base. However, the package does not include the ability to encrypt scripts nor does it provide a license which would allow users to distribute their products commercially.

Although projects cannot be commercially distributed under the SuperCard P.E. license, users can share the projects that they created non-commercially using the SuperCard Player. Also, an upgrade path to the standard version of SuperCard is available for those users who decide that they would like to distribute their projects commercially and would like to have access to the script encryption feature. WebbToys Releases Preview of MakingProgress
Chilton Webb, maintainer of both WebbToys and MacintoshDeveloper.com, recently made an announcement on the SuperCard List that he has released a preview of MakingProgress, a progress bar external. Although not complete, Chilton explains that the external is usable and works either 97 or 98 percent of the time, depending on whether the large horizontal progress bar or the tiny horizontal progress bar is used. Chilton explains why the progress bar does not always work correctly and how to avoid those glitches:

At the current time, the large horizontal progress bar is able to draw correctly 97% of the time, and the tiny horizontal progress bar is able to draw correctly 98% of the time. The reason is that I got lazy and didn't include settings for the percentages 1, 2, and 99 in the large, or 98 and 99 in the small. So at those percentages, white space fills the smaller of the two parts, be it the filled or unfilled section.

This external is completely usable right now, just make sure you don't try to set it to one of the percentages mentioned above, or you'll get odd gaps of white space.

According to Chilton, the following features are planned for the next revision of MakingProgress:

IncWell and Solutions Etcetera Release Standalone Maker 3.6.2
The new version, which is a free update for SuperCard users of version 3.5 or higher, improves the encryption feature of the Standalone Maker. The encryption feature allows the author of a SuperCard standalone or a SuperCard project to hide the project's scripts from others viewing the project. The new encryption feature speeds up the encryption process ("building up secured projects") by up to 1000%. Scott Simon, director of Product development for IncWell, explained how the new encryption mechanism allows IncWell to make Standalone Maker more customizable for developers:

With the addition of the new script encryption mechanism in this version, it is now possible for us to also make an editable version of Standalone Maker available to those developers who wish to customize the application for their own use. This is something we have had many requests for, and it will be made available as an update to users of the SuperCard Internals Toolbox.

HTTP Receives a Queue of Updates
Since the previous HTTP news post, where version 1.1 was noted, three other updates have been made in this short time. In version 1.2, the ability to POST was added as an alternative to receive the file. Version 1.3 added support for 68k machines. The latest update, version 1.4, fixes a bug where using GET, which was the original way to receive an online file, resulted in POST. The update also prevents the user from using the 68k buttons rather than the PowerPC buttons. (The project has a set of buttons for the two code bases). [download] [6/24]

WebbToys Releases HTTP 1.1
The Mac Observer reported that WebbToys has released HTTP 1.1. HTTP gives SuperCard the abilities of powerful web downloads. Another feature of the project is the ability to download directly to RAM. This allows the project to work from a locked volume. Finally, HTTP supports URLs which contain up to 4,096 characters. [download] [6/24, written 6/22]

WebbToys Releases Another Tool
Krytton 1.0 is a new searching tool which was designed to search text files that may change on a daily basis or even more frequently.
